Modesto’s relatively large population and position as the seat of Stanislaus County means that it is a place bustling with activity. Traffic congestion, particularly at rush hour, has become the norm and has resulted in an increase in motor vehicle and bicycle accidents. Approximately, seventy-four fatal traffic accidents occur annually in Stanislaus County. Thankfully, Modesto has a system of planned bike paths and bike routes for cycling enthusiasts to enjoy.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that over 51,000 bicyclists are injured annually, with most accidents occurring in urban areas like Modesto. The average age of injured cyclists is 31. Each year, more than 600 bicyclists are killed in traffic accidents. Causes of Bicycle Accidents

Bicycle injury accidents are not altogether unavoidable due to the fact that riders share the streets of Modesto with motor vehicles. Even where bike lanes are present, dangers still lurk at every intersection. Among the more common causes of cycling accidents are:

  • A motorist cuts off the bicyclist
  • A motorist misuses the bike lane
  • A vehicle follows too closely behind the cyclist
  • A parked motorist opens a car door into the path of the rider
  • Failure to see the bicycle
  • Poor Bicycle Maintenance
  • Dangerous road conditions or hazards
  • Intoxication
  • Inclement weather

Bicyclists must be vigilant and take proactive measures to reduce the dangers associated with cycling on public roadways. Cyclists need to be alert, bike defensively and always assume that the motorist does not see you.

Other Safe Cycling Tips:

  • Regularly check and service your bike
  • Check proper tire inflation prior to each ride
  • Attach reflectors to the front and back of the bicycle
  • When cycling at night, place a light at the front and the back of the bike.
  • Wear bright-colored, reflective clothing
  • Wear a bicycle helmet, no matter how short the ride

Another great way to prevent bicycle accidents is for Modesto residents to utilize the system of bikeways available throughout the city. Avid bicyclists like to ride along Modesto’s well-developed bike path system. Dozens of paths through and around the city have been set up for the protection and enjoyment of riders. The city has designated three types of bike paths throughout Modesto:

  • Class I: This type of path provides riders with a paved area removed from city streets.
  • Class II: This type is a designated one-way path along a city street or highway delineated either by striping or stenciling
  • Class III: Most commonly referred to as a bike route, this type of path is not set off from other lanes of traffic, but merely designates an area of shared use.
