A bicyclist should wear a helmet at all times
Studies consistently show that wearing a bike helmet reduces head injuries and death in bicycle accidents by at least 75%. Remember: a small child needs only to fall a distance of two feet to incur some type of brain injury. A bicycle helmet can take the impact of a fall and reduce injury to the brain and skull. At all times, your child should wear a helmet. No exceptions. Remember: the American Academy of Pediatrics has concluded that the majority of bicycle accidents involving children happen close to home. Adults should always wear helmets as well.
Bicycle safety includes obeying the rules of the road and paying attention at intersections. Be predictable, be bright, and always use common sense. Always be careful when you’re riding next to cars, as doors can and will open suddenly without notice. At any one time our California Bicycle Injury law firm has ten open car door cases. Take bike safety seriously and always teach your children to be predictable riders.
Another reason to ride extremely conservatively is the recent United States Department of Transportation study which concluded that 23% of all bicycle accidents are due to a motorist not following the three foot rule, which requires motorists to give bicyclists three feet of clearance.
As extremely experienced California including Los Angeles, San Diego, Bay Area and Sacramento bicycle lawyers, we do not recommend riding side-by-side. We know that it makes it easier to be hit by a motorist. As California bicycle lawyers with offices from San Diego to Santa Rosa, we are experts in all safety aspects of bicycle riding.
Always use a helmet, ride with traffic, stop at stop signs, look both ways. Do not ride on the sidewalk. Walk your bike thru intersections.
In 2009, there were 51,000 bicyclists injured in motorist accidents. 17% of those injured were 14 years or younger. In 2009, 630 bicyclists were killed. These are figures from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.
Have your helmet fitted properly, get your bicycle periodically inspected.
Recent studies in the U.K., Australia, and the United States indicate that helmets decrease the risk of sudden brain injury up to 88%. Cycling head injuries are in two areas. First, are direct injuries, where the head makes impact with another object, and second, are rotational injuries, which occur when the head is twisted. Unfortunately, rotational injuries can cause death or chronic brain damage.
