Insurance Companies Are Using Social Media Such As Facebook To Find Frauds In Claimants
Social networking websites such as Facebook and Myspace have become the go-to places for insurance companies checking on the legitimacy of injury victims who are making insurance claims. This is the new way in which they do background checks. Insurance companies are exploiting the free, easily accessible websites. They are the latest tools for investigating insurance fraud. Investigators merely mine databases and search Facebook. They look for things that don't add up. Like someone who claimed they hurt their back and then brag on Facebook that they just ran a marathon. Social networking sites are standard tools, so indicated the Vice President of claims administration for the American Insurance Association. Investigators and Adjusters are considered negligent if they do not conduct a quick scan of social media to check for contradictions.
We highly suggest that our clients shut down or tighten the privacy settings on their social media profiles as a precaution if they hire us to pursue a personal injury claim on their behalf. Remember: insurance companies will bring up anything – photos of our clients drinking to prove bad character, physical exercise to prove the lack of honesty of injury claims, even unrelated actions to just to prove that our client may be doing something wrong.
