Modesto Police Seek Leads in Fatal Hit-and-Run Bicycle Accident
A 67-year-old Modesto man has died after being involved in a hit-and-run accident early Friday morning.
According to News10 ABC, Ray Rogers was riding his bicycle across the intersection at Sutter and Rouse Avenues when he was struck by a white pickup truck. The truck fled the scene and Rogers later died of his injuries at a local hospital.
Modesto police say the driver may have stopped momentarily near Leon Avenue and Colorado Avenue and that the vehicle may have minor to moderate front-end damage. Police are continuing to investigate the early morning accident and anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information about the driver is encouraged to call Modesto Traffic Officer Letsinger at 209-652-2260. You can also send an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers by texting "TIP704" to 274637.
As demonstrated by this unfortunate incident a bicycle accident can have devastating consequences for the victim and their loved ones. Hopefully, police will be able to find the driver and determine whether Mr. Roger's death was truly an accident or whether driver negligence was involved. If the driver caused the accident by acting recklessly or carelessly, he or she may face criminal charges.
In addition to criminal penalties, the driver may also be held civilly liable for causing the victim's death. The victim's family would benefit from speaking with a qualified personal injury lawyer, should an arrest be made.
